I promise they're not my dreds. It's just that I'm in Mexico with my friend and she has dreds and she was playing with this cat and she got fleas and now she wants to comb them out or shave them off. What else can we do?

Just because she has fleas/lice in her hair doesn't mean that she has to cut them. How long has she had the locs? It may be nearly impossible to just comb them out. More than likely she has lice, fleas do not usually get attracted to humans.

Have her soak her hair in tea tree oil then put all of her hair up in a shower cap or saran wrap for a couple of hours. The tea tree oil kills the live bug, but not the eggs. Ack!

Purchase Rid, of course you can't comb it through because you simply cannot comb dread. Apply the Rid to your scalp, and get it inbetween the hair and on your roots...you may need to get several boxes of the stuff, because with dreads, you'll want to put on some gloves and use the stuff like shampoo. Let it sit for a while under a bag. I'd suggest using shampoo/conditioner for follow ups. Every other shampoo...use the live shampoo and conditioner and then afterwards use regular clarifying shampoo or Suave Tea Tree shampoo...then use the lice shampoo conditioner again. Do this and you really shouldn't have to get rid of your locs. Also check out this site, they have some techniques. http://www.knottyboy.com/learn/faqs/

Good luck, hope you don't end up cutting your locs!

It is not normal for fleas to be attracted to human hair. There must be something she is using on her locs for the fleas to be attracted to her or she must have brought the fleas back to her living environment. Anyway the best thing for your "friend" to do is to first do flea control for her entire house and her self by doing the following:
Remove all bedding - wash or dry clean.
Thoroughly vacuum all carpeting and rugs.
Sprinkle flea powder inside sofa cushions, along the perimeter of all the walls and cover your floor area with it.
Scratch or brush into the carpet.
Vacuum excess and at least two to three times a week.
Discard vacuum cleaner bags
Wash all clothing that could have come into contact with fleas or clothing "she" was wearing when she interacting with the cat

But before doing all this there is something very simple to do. I've heard that using lemon dish soap helps so try that first.

HMMM!!! In this case fleas act as lice. To get rid of them your friend will need to put treatments of lice remover or cut the dreads. Anything else will not do as fleas just like lice lay eggs.

Then if your friend has been in touch with his/her clothes, bed, etc. They will need to be severely cleaned or thrown away because if not the fleas may come back.

***If it was me I would just save the trouble and start fresh and bald.***

Give her a flea collar, some bump fighter and a buzztrimmer. Once fleas get in, they don't come out! Trust me, I know someone, who knows someone who knew someone who had dreadful dreads. GROSS.

Fleas carry disease!
