I grew up with only Jack Russells, and they are very protective of children especially as you already have young children they will be fine. They only nip if they are in the house before the children come along because like any dog they get jealous. I can tell you they will be very loyal to your children as they love playing with young children who are full of beans, but they most definitely will be more over protective than even you would be because they see children as their playmates. I bought a Jack Russell pup after my children we born and he really is like the pup that I grew up with over 25 years ago.

How young are we talking. I would not trust any dog with very young children. If they are old enough to fight back then I suppose a jack russel is fine. They are very small after all.

go to akc.org and read up on the breed. also go to the Jack Russell website where they give ins and outs of the breed as well as recommendations on whether they are good with children and other pets.
I have personally known 4 owners of Jack Russell's. 3 of the 4 had to get rid of the dog for being downright vicious. They are high spirited and need lots of attention and exercise. they are also known biters.

Jack Russel's are very excitable dogs and have lots of energy and can get snappy with children (or anything) that gets on their nerves but i think if any dog is raised the right way it will get on well with children.

Jack Russells are wonderful dogs - full of energy and very protective. We never had any problem with our dog around children, but if your concerned, there are other small dogs that are wonderful with kids - Cavalier King Charles love the company of children and are very safe.

Jack russells are a hunting terrier, highly energetic, not good for first time dog owners and not recommended for children under 6. And older children definitely have to be taught how to treat them because they won't tolerate any abuse or rough handling. I would never consider them for young kids.

jack russel dogs are superb with children. they are playful and have lots of energy. perfect for children with lots of energy. it takes the child outside instead of the norm of our times to spend all their time in front of the television or computer. jack russel dogs are also very protective and they are excellent watch dogs, the best you can get. should you want to get jack russel dogs, get two. it is always good to have two dogs, one dog gets too lonely. with two jack russel dogs you will have great fun and loving times with your children and the dogs.
