She turned the mirror over so the reflecting -side was against the wall.

I read that book so long ago that I don't remember much of the story, but I will guess that if she had just heard of a death, custom required that all mirrors and portraits must be covered. Turning a mirror to the wall would be a quick way to "cover" it.
