I used to work at a hotel, here's the reasons for bad lighting.

1. to save money. the less money spent on electricity the better.

2. so you won't see how dirty it is. the less time spent deep cleaning the furnishings the quicker they can turn rooms over and don't have to pay the housekeepers as much.

I muse over this question all too often. Where the main light should be, there's always a smoke detector. Even with all the lights on, there's barely enough light to read by.

I find hotels rooms that need the key card slotted in to activate the power particularly irritating - the hotel seem all to keen to save a few miserable watts of electricity!

Not as bad as the ceiling fans stuck on the lowest speed, and you just can't make it go any faster - Hotels can be vindictive at times, especially in the middle of August :(

hotel rooms are for special occasions and in special times you want everyone to look good... ^^
