I usually try a heating pad for a while-and then if it's still bad alternate it with ice.

You should go to a chiropractor. If you have a medical type problem you go to your MD, if you have a spinal problem you go to a "bone doctor" - a chiropractor. Some people think they're quacks but I couldn't live w/o mine, I work for one, and there are many people who benefit from them and are also able to avoid surgery because of them. Check it out! i stretch my neck each side for a few seconds but if that doesnt help, i ask somebody to massage my neck for me and that usually works.
