To start think of a pot of water on a stove boiling. Each cubic centimeter that evaporates it will absorber 60 calories.
In a cloud u recover this energy each cubic centimeter that condenses will release 60 calories.
If the cold front is strong and the condense rate is high the energy is tremendous.
