I have a three- year old shih-tzu named mickey and he has golden fur. I believe that the golden ones are adorable. It really depends which gender you want because if it s a black female, it will look a bit different from the male.
It is true that you have to keep the fur clean and prevent tearing by keeping the coat trimmed. By personal experience the golden shih-tzu gets dirtier than the solid black one. The black dog will save you time and money, so it is the best choice. Good luck with that!

We have an adorable 8 month old Shih Tzu and she's beautiful. She's what we call champagne -- not all gold, mostly whitish.

Advice. These dogs get tears around their eyes that are dark in color and need to be wiped away. In her case, with such light fur, she looks dirty unless we use tear wipes daily.

If you aren't afraid of the work, get a light colored one. If you'd rather less work, go for the dark colored one. Either way, you'll be so happy you got this breed!!

I prefer the gold. But I grew up with a black shih tzu named Jetta, so its just personal preference. They are great little dogs.

Garynjanice gave a good answer.
Please just tell us you are buying your pup from a reputable breeder and not a troll or a pet shop.
Research the grooming needs of the Shih Tzu and remember to spay or neuter the pup at the appropriate age. Enjoy your pup which ever one you choose.

Yes, the lighter colors show the dogs tears, but dark or light colored, their eyes have to be cleaned.
Whichever you chose or get, they are adorable, loving and wonderful dogs.
I have a grey one..not so common, and even though I don't see the tears or marks under his eyes, I clean them every day.
