My dog (a border collie mix) insists that you will scratch this area. It has become an obsession with him. When you are standing/walking, he'll slip between your legs and stand there for you to scratch him. If you walk forward, he walks backwards to stay in this spot. If you turn around and away from him, he'll just turn around and slip right between your legs. If you ignore him he talks (not barking, not growling, just a talky noise sounds like "roo") and will paw at your leg until you give up and scratch his butt. It's also like his spot that makes his leg quiver and shake when you scratch it.

I've tried looking online for an answer, and while it seems to be a common thing for dogs to like, I can't seem to find a reason WHY.

I think a lot of the answers are rated PG. I always thought it was an erogenous zone for the dog. I would scratch my Collie there as a child and my Mom would always say, "Stop before the dog humps you leg!!!"

I never found out....thanks for the memory =0) LOL

It's a hard place to get to. My dogs love to be scratched there.

The bigger question I think you should be asking is why does your dog have you trained to scratch that spot? :) If it's something that gets on your nerves, stop giving in, no matter how annoying he gets. Give him no attention for the begging, not even negative attention. After a week or so he'll get the idea.

Of course, if it doesn't bother you, and he's very polite in every other aspect, guess there's no issue! Just sounded like it was getting on your nerves.

Hahah... it truly is because it feels good! My aunt's shih tzu's love being scratched there. it truly is an somewhat problem-free section that canine like being scratched because they could be able to't attain it themselves.

lol... he just likes the attention... by basset hound, precious, loves to get her belly rubbed and she insists that anyone who walks into the room rubs her belly. She rolls over at you feet and paws your leg and if that does not work.. she just lies there and waves her paw back and forth making a rubbing motion... it is the cutest thing...

He may have bug/flea bite there. The bugs like to bite right at the base of the tail.

Also, my dogs occasionally get bit by a flea or two even though I use Frontline every month.

it is sorta of like you would problay like a good massage. or something that is really hard for you to get alot. they really cant reach back there to scratch. plus he sounds really smart to get your attention the way he does.
when you are at the vet the next time with him ask your vet. .

They can't reach it themselves, and it feels good.
Just like it feels good to have someone lightly scratch your back.
