My daughter has been home for some time, and I have taken her to many doctors. One says its Manonucleosis, another says its a viral infection, and yet another says she will be fine and to just take her home. But that high Red blood cell scares me a bit. What could be wrong?

My first action would be to ask for a monospot test, which can confirm the diagnosis of mononeuclosis or eliminate it. Mono is caused by a virus, called Epstein-Barr, and is usually a mild infection in teenagers and young adults. But it can cause other problems and can be a more serious illness, which does need attention. One of the complications of mono is the destruction of red blood cells, and that might explain the elevated count- since the body would try to produce more to offset the destruction. Given the fever and other symptoms, I suggest you find another doctor, request the monospot and get her treated appropriately. Or if these symptoms have gotten worse since the doctor saw her, return to him and have another exam. As I said, mono is usually a mild infection and resolves itself without problems- but that doesn't mean there can't be any and they do need treating. The doctor may have seen her as a mild case, but things don't seem to be staying that way. So go to the doctor, as soon as you can.
