How many varetials have you tried? Have you tried really nice whites, a Sancerre, an aged Riesling? Would you spend the same amount on a good white as a good red?

Pewsey Vale Riesling The Contours Individual Vineyard Selection Eden Valley
Just a touch of diesel, scored 92. Absolutely charming wine and good to cellar for years.

I drink both white and red wines equally (though I'm picky about what I'll drink in each set).

Yes, I've tried significant numbers of each and yes, I've spent as much on whites as I have on reds (except one exceptional bottle of red wine I procured which is going to sit on my wine rack for at least 20 years before I open it)

aged what?
its great you like white wine, and certain white wines have the ability to age, and imm not a expert, but fresh, crisp whites are fun to drink and then get serious, pull the cork on a red!!!!

If you don't like the petrol character, DON'T AGE RIESLINGS!! They will CERTAINLY develop more as you age them
