I always start at the top. Hopefully, when you get to the bottom of the tree your cord plugged into the wall will connect to your light end.

Okay, I light trees for a living...Light the tree starting from the bottom. Put a power bar at the bottom of the tree so it's easy to turn on and off and it's safer that way too.
I usually do 100 lights per foot that the tree is tall. That gives you a nicely lighted and professional looking tree. Weave the lights up and down each branch. Never connect more than three strands of lights together at the same time because the fuses will most likely blow. If you need more than three strands, then plug in a new one on the power bar and run it up to the top. The most important thing to remember too is WORK WITH THE LIGHTS ON! That way you can see how it looks and you'll know if a strand goes out. If a strand goes out give your strand a good shake because it may be simply a loose connection.
I hope this answers all your questions about tree lighting!

I would start at the bottom. If you start at the top, you'll have one long string running up the base of the tree. Also, be sure to plug it in while you are stringing the lights so you can make sure they're working.

I start at the top so if you need more lights you can keep connecting them hopfully ending with the plug in cord at the bottom of the tree ! Merry Christmas!

You start from the top because the cord that goes into the wall will end up at the bottom so you can plug it into the wall and it wont show as bad if it was sticking out at the top.

I start from the bottom, from the plug-in, and go up and down. I use several strands. I check each string first to make sure they are working.

You should start at the top that way if you're going to have an angel/star you will have a plug to plug it in with.

From the top, this way you can just keep plugging the strands into eachother, and it gets you closer to the electrical outlet when your done.
