i live in california and recently just got my new car's license plates. am i required to put the front plate on?

Yes, as per California Vehicle Code section 5200.

Your question is if you're REQUIRED and the answer is YES. But I havent put my front license plate on my car since I bought it. On the other hand if you put some kind of cute plate with your name or a cartoon character or of your favorite team or something like that, I have seen people stopped and given tickets for it.

All of the states I have lived in do not require a front plate so you can put a designer one in there or nothing at all but each state is different and you need to call the DMV and ask them what CA. state law is.

I've been driving around without a front plate on my truck since I bought it 10 years ago. It's an old studebaker, and there's no place to put it.

Yes, if you don't have one and police want to pull you over, they will use that as a cheap excuse to do so.
