Not taking cost into consideration as not all bakers believe it to be a cost-saver since there really is more work involved with extra baking and such.

That's interesting. I went to a wedding awhile back where the display cake was fake and there were sheet cakes on a table out front where guests could pick what flavor they wanted and it was sliced to order so it didn't have time to dry out like it would if it was cut before dinner and then wait an hour or more before serving it. Nearly every guest mentioned they enjoyed that setup and no one said anything about it being tacky (and they were the types who wouldn't let you forget if it was) and this was a very formal affair.

But I guess everyone has their own ideas of what is inappropriate and what isn't.

Usually when people do this, the sheet cakes are kept in the kitchen and a small real cake is decorated and cut for show, then wheeled away.

And "magically," the caterers being out 200 servings, cut from a cake made for 50 people! But for goodness sakes-- no one cares. Seriously.

There is nothing tacky or improper about doing this.

I think that is usually how it goes when you choose a very elaborate cake for display. Think of how huge the display cake would have to be to serve every guest at a large wedding! The sheet cake should definilty be of the same icing coloring of the display cake though (although I doubt most people would notice if it was different), and the sheet cake should NEVER be displayed! Someone else mentioned having different cakes out for guests to choose from. This is typically called a "Viennese Hour" where many differents cakes/pastries are put out buffet style and served with assorted liquers, coffees, and tea. Hope this helps!

Any type of cake is acceptable. The Wedding Couple may chose to have a small traditional tiered cake for pictures, and use other sized and flavors of cakes to go along with their private cake, they may also chose to have deserts of many kinds, such as brownies, small danish, tiny cream puff's, chocolate candies, also some fruit....this is all wonderful as most people would welcome something different and most people don't have room for a piece of cake and would want a variety of choices, and it makes a lovely display and usually impresses the guests.!

I think it's a great way to go, but it tends to look tacky when put out with the real wedding cake. Most guests won't notice where the cake comes from, but they will notice the sheet cake it if it's on display.

My sister used a smaller, beautiful cake for the cutting ceremony . It WAS edible, but the waiters brought out the sheet cake from the kitchen. It was from Publix Supermarket! It was a great tasting cake. I believe that is definitely the way to go.

I agree with Etiquette Gal...if they have the sheet cakes in the kitchen then no one will be the wiser and besides, the sheet cake will taste as good if not better than some wedding cakes!

There's nothing wrong with it. When the cake is cut no one really cares from which layer their piece is cut. So if it's cut from a sheet cake, and it tasted good, that's all any one really cares about........

Yeah, if the caterers are cutting up in the back - no one will know.

Go to Costco or Sam's Club for the xtra sheet cake, don't pay your cake maker for that!

I think that's a great idea...especially since you don't need to order a sheet cake from a fancy caterer and can go to the grocer where you've been ordering your birthday cakes for years!

My fiancee and I are actually getting our cake from Tops since we love their cakes so much.

I think it's a good idea, or if you're having a smaller reception go with cupcakes. I had a friend do that her wedding, I wasn't able to go but she said it worked out great.
