The first commandment, "I am the LORD your God; you shall have no other gods before me” teaches us that we should realize that there is only one God and he is above all else; God created everything that is good; and not to worship false God’s such as money, sex, celebrities. ETC. Why is this an important message for today's world? and Why is this message a challenge to today's culture and values?

Well, with your posting about sex not being godly, I Have to disagree with you on that. God gave man the gift of Orgasim to go forth and reproduce himself as much as possible. It was SATAN the snake, who talked Eve into eating the fruit and made her see her nakedness was shameful, so i firmly belive that the idea that sex is wrong is PURLY from Satan, not from God.
As for the first commandment being so hard in todays culture? easy, we have science to explain things to us, so God being the all knowing, all powerful being in our lives is hard to accept because we now know so much more than when these were written. We are no longer as naive as Moses and his followers.

Yahweh Is Not A God!
Another deception Satan spreads among men is that Yahweh is just one of many gods. By this false doctrine, Satan has deceivingly EQUALIZED herself with YAHWEH in the eyes of the DECEIVED WORLD!
Many people today even believe Satan is mightier than Yahweh, and have openly raised up groups to call upon Satan to help them gain riches.
This has been accomplished because deceived man thinks Yahweh is just a god among many gods:
Exodus 20:3, KJV__
Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:3 is part of the first commandment of the Ten Commandments. The word which has been translated other in the King James Version is the Hebrew word, acher and means: hinder, those left behind.
Yahweh commanded His people not to WORSHIP THE GODS they left behind in the land of Egypt! The word, other, was deliberately placed in the King James Version to deceive man into thinking YAHWEH is just ANOTHER god.
In the days of Mosheh, the Egyptians worshiped every god known to man. Jewish writings say the names of these gods were written in a book. Jewish writings also say, the Egyptian Priests COULD NOT FIND THE NAME OF YAHWEH in that book!
The word el, which has been translated into English as god, was NEVER A TITLE FOR YAHWEH in the days of Mosheh.

That is a good point. I think we have so much "stuff" today, gadgets, technical toys, TV shows to watch, work to do, stores to shop at ............. there are just SO many things nowadays to put before the Lord that is why it's important today. I myself try to be careful not to put my computer time before the Lord. Sometimes I find myself going on the computer during my prayer time instead of praying. Anything you put before the Lord is your idol. Everyone has there own stumbling blocks ....... idols.......false gods that our flesh wants to get absorbed in that will pull us away from God. I think more questions like yours make us all the more aware of it so that we can prevent ourselves from falling into that trap. Thanks for the reminder.

If you are going to quote the commandments, please get them right.
“I am Jehovah your God, who have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves. 3 You must not have any other gods against my face. "
LORD is a mistranslation, the same as "Man" being the english translation of 'Juan'.
In this world many have placed things before Jehovah. money, food, entertainment.

ANY THING WE PUT BEFORE GOD becomes our God.
It can be your mate,your children,your job.
As a young person ,my husband became my God.I put him before every thing.God was not happy.
It matters not what the thing is,if it is more important than God ,it is an idol.<><

It is because the world appears to have been caught up in it and willing to mimic these actions, it's a challenge because people are out for them selves and to do what feels good to you no matter who you hurt.

People need priorities in their lives. Too many people pursue things that distract them from living a moral life. Pursuit of wealth and goods causes people to become selfish and lose sight of what life is really about.

There is no mentioning of "money, sex, celebrities" in 1 Commandment. Do not over interpret it.
