I moved from New York to NC in 2000, but did not work in NC, just went to school. Now I got a statement saying I owe NC taxes for that year. Do I have to pay?

File a NC return. Sounds like they have done your return for you. If you have unearned income you may have to pay tax to NC on that. Depends what it is. If they are demanding money, please deal with this now (or as soon as your exams are over). You are more likely to find an accountant who can help before we all get insanely busy.

If you earned any income while you were a resident of NC, you own NC taxes on that amount. I believe there is a credit for taxes paid where the income was earned. Even if you did not earn income while a resident of NC, state law may require you to complete a return. I once lived in a city that required all residents over 18 to file a tax return even if they had no income.
