I just installed Linux Ubuntu on an old machine of mine. Trouble is, it doesn't play sounds. I was warned that installing Linux would mess up the nonessential drivers, so I did a search and came up with the ALSA driver tarball. Unfortunately, I don't know what to do with it.

The good news is that Ubuntu probably has the driver already, ALSA comes with the default install. The bad news is that it's hard to diagnose a problem like this without knowing exactly what kind of sound card you have and what Ubuntu is set up like right now.

For instance, your card may need to have extra information passed to the driver in order to get it to work because it was built before 'plug and play' worked in any reliable way and Ubuntu simply has no way to detect the proper settings.

Your best bet is to head on over to http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ and plug the make and model of your sound card into the search box. If that doesn't turn anything useful up, search for your symptoms.

Lotsa useful info there.
