Over the past few week's I have probably gave about £150 - to charity.. Everyday someone is always wanting a donation for something or other.. Today - I had to say - enough is enough..I simply cant give anymore...does anyone feel the same ? Should we get a receipt for when we make a donation so we can show it - to other collectors to avoid any embarassment ?

Yes it happens all the time. I resent it when I am at the check out and there are kids and mums all throwing my carefully collected tomatoes etc into a heap of carrier bags. Trouble is I won't complain so the merrygo round is on the go all the time.

I think it is a very idea about the receipt. Certainly would help someone like me who hasn't the balls to say no more! No More thank you. Charity begins at home now, though I still donate to children in need and the like.

I think we all get weary of the constant beggin this time of year. I try to remember how many wonderful things I have been given in life, and when I can I do give a bit.
When I can't I simply say "I'm sorry, I am really skinned." Truth is after buying several pounds of sweets and two Christmas cakes, not to mention prezzies on a student's budget, I am a bit skint. The good news: I have a tank of petrol and am doing without anything. So, if I can give a little more, I am happy to do so.
Now having said that, a little trick: Say you have three left you think you can freely give--don't put it all in the same collection! I put in a bit here, a bit there.
One of the very earliest memories I have is of being with my gram on a high street and her giving me a few coppers to chuck in. I guess I am, for a cheeky person, well trained to share what I have. I think most of us are, and that's where the charities have us, right where they want us!
Charles "That Cheeky Lad"
None the less, though a little more skinned, a little wiser...A Wicked Happy Christmas to everyone!
Peace and prosperity to all!

I don't mind the can rattle but I wish they would stop calling me at home. The fire department union calls for donations to help with kids programs and the police union calls twice a year to raise money for programs to keep violent offenders off the streets? What the heck? If you want to raise money then do something to raise the money. I would rather donate to the homeless guy playing his guitar on the street. He's making an effort.

These charity collectors are not allowed to shake the can as it is classed as intimidation, and I dont very often put money into these cans as most of the money collected goes into admin and yes the collectors do get paid out of the proceedings.

Ps I was really annoyed once at a family funeral (already expensive) as we were leaving they were collecting money at the door! how bad is that?

True - it's called compassion fatigue. I pick a few charities, and give through direct debit via gift aid. I then politely explain that to other collectors, because after all, they are trying thier best.

yes I am, and I have stopped giving, your hand is never out of your pocket and they are all parasites, so now I just keep looking ahead and completely ignore them, its the only way to do it, you should try it sometime, there is NO need for you to be embarrased, why are you...those charities are very well off, dont you think we give enough through taxes in this country, everything we buy is taxed and there is no shame on walking by.

I already give to my nominated charities on a monthly basis, I simply cant give anymore... I would just tell them firmly that you have your specific charities that you give to and draw the line at that.

Dont be embarrased by saying no... afterall they are standing in the street sometimes in the way!

Yes I am; it gets embarrassing. One girl gave me such a dirty look when I refused to give that I turned back and told her why.

It was for cancer and although I've lost family to this dreadful illness, I told her that I also have pets and as I wouldn't give my pets up to be experimented on, I didn't see why I should pay for other animals to be.

I don't mind giving to animal charities.

I think many times you feel like you are being pressured by them, but you probably aren't.
The pressure to give comes from within yourself.
You know what your limit is to give. You know how much you can give without strapping yourself too much.
Just smile at the person rattling the can and know your conscience is clear...you have given already.
Merry CHRIST-mas !!!

What really annoys me is the ones you give to already that then ring and ask if you could possibly make it any more!!

My father in law had just died of cancer and I already gave to Cancer Uk. On the day of his funeral they rang to ask if I could possibly up my donation!

If they can afford to call every doner, then they have too much money. I don't give to them any more.

I just give to 3 local charities where I can see where the money goes.

thank you - I needed to rant!
