I started about 2 months ago and i was asking the same question. What i do, i work out two muscles a day, and work out my abs every day. For instance on Monday and Thursday work out your chest and back, and do 5 sets of 25 crunches for your abs. Tuesday and Friday work your shoulders and upper arms. (bicep, triceps, forearm) and don't forget abs. and Wednesday and Saturday work your thighs and calves, and don't forget abs!
I don't always work out every day, it doesn't matter. if you are just starting, start slow. don't work yourself to hard you can hurt yourself.
Look on the Internet for different methods and exercises.
Start with machines for a while then go to free weights. Oh, and always stretch.

You can work your self up with free weights just start low do about 5 reps and work your self up to 10 or 20 reps then move up a bit when your body gets use to the weight. For abs do sit ups crunches and leg raises, and arms you can work on both biceps and triceps using dumbbells
When you can do your full routines 5 -20 times a day at a comfortable weight and you can do a days work of 10- 20 reps for each keep moving up. if using free weight dumbbells I do not know how strong you are so go for 10 or 15 libs to start with.
Make sure you have someone to spot you if you are doing free weights.

For abs, obviously crunches. For the arms I would suggest hammer curls as they not only get the arms thicker than regular curls but they also work the forearms. For the chest is the old bench press, push ups, dips. For the back I would suggest wide front grip pull ups. They give you a wider back. you know, the wings. cardio before and after the weights is a great help.
I use dumbbells. They are easier to handle, especially if your working out alone.

It sounds to me like you just want tone and firm up some areas rather lose big amounts of weight so I would highly reccomend pilates. It does amazing things for your abs and back but also involves your arms and legs. It is the best all around work out I have found.
