I believe in a diety because I always eat far too much at this time of year and need to lose a few pounds by dietying and exercising!! However, I also like the idea of a deity because it seems an awful pointless waste of life if this is all we can expect!
Also, I'm not an animal, except in bed where I am WILD!!

Youd like richard dawkings try "unweaving the rainbow". Of course there are lots of evolutionary reasons why we believe in deities, too many to go into here without being really boring and anal. That there are good psychological reasons doesnt mean that it isnt true of course. I used to think much the same as you, now Im firmly planted in agnosticism. Open mindedness is very important to me, I think if everyone were to learn to listen to the beliefs of others with an ear to trying to understand and accept the world would be a nicer place.
But whatever I agree we are animals, what the hell else could we be? Im not a plant.

Because we are progressed. Lower (unfortunate term) animals are not capable of thought (as far as we know) which would lead them to believe in a concept such as God. (Except, I assume, the ones that St. Francis preached to). Or perhaps they believe in a God, and we don't know it.
In any case, we, certainly, are the only creatures ever to publish books about a God. We are the only creatures to argue about God on the Internet. We seem to be the only ones to have killed each other over the concept of God.
Does it reallyl sound like we are progressed?

Because:
1. We climbed our way to the top of the food chain, and upon arriving at the top, I guess we still still have that instinct to look up at something to fear.
2. We're the only animals conscious of ourselves, and our mortality - we have the inquisitiveness to wonder why things are, and the imagination to make up an answer.

Animals do not know God, therefore have no religion. Human beings know God, therefore have religion.
In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!

Most people probably still believe in a god because we are still taught this at a very early age by organisations who make millions if not billions out of it. It is a very lucrative business, they even managed to make the Mafia go green with envy.

Fear, comfort in the unknown. Some people use it as a safety blanket. It seems to work for them.
