That is a way for impurities w/ in the body to let themselves out.
There are many causes of boils. Some boils can be caused by an ingrown hair. Others can form as the result of a splinter or other foreign material that has become lodged in the skin. Others boils, such as those of acne, are caused by plugged sweat glands that become infected.
The skin is an essential part of our immune defense against materials and microbes that are foreign to our body. Any break in the skin, such as a cut or scrape, can develop into an abscess should it then become infected with bacteria.

I'm not sure how old your children are, but if they KEEP getting boils on their butts, then they might be suffering from Hidradenitis Suppurativa. I would suggest taking them to the doctor to get the boils cultured. If the cultures come back with "no abnormal growth", then check out http://www.hs-usa.org for more info on HS.

Boils are caused by the staph bacteria. If you kids are getting them frequently you may need to take them to the doc next time to get some antibiotic therapy to help keep the bacteria at bay.
