The I.V. was on the back of my left hand for about an hour. Back of hand bruised severely for two+ weeks. Now the vein has 4 hard bumps that are tender to the touch, each about a quarter inch long and a quarter inch apart. Is this normal? Will it go away?
Thanks.

Hard Vein In Hand

I just recently had same problem after spending a week in hospital.
It's called some like fibrosis which means a build up of fiber, in this case where IV was placed. It seem to be fairly common and treatable. My doctor recommended warm wet compresses place on area for twenty minutes several times a day. I worked for me, but has taken several week before it disappeared.
After re-reading your question, I think that you should see your doctor about your problem to be on the safe side.

It happens. The IV may have become infiltrated. That's when the tubing that is supposed to stay in the vein goes all the way through. It happens and yes, it will go away. Use warm compresses and rub it with lotion everyday to break it up. It will get better.

scarring and bruising of the blood vessel the IV was in. Shouldn't be a problem unless it won't go away. A lot of times, when the damage is deep, it takes a few days for it to show, but will ease just as a surface bruise will.

Sounds like you have phlebitis. It will go away with some time, and warm compresses help as well. Make sure that the redness (if there is redness) does not spread up your arm. It your arm or hand swells, goes cold or loses sensation, please seek medical attention though. Check out this site for more info and get better soon :) http://www.dr-bull.com/phlebitis.htm
