Just use some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or tissue. Please dont use anything else, no water, soap etc, these cause more harm than good by trapping moisture in the ear canal. Alcohol evaporates and dries quickly.Keep an eye on it though, it may just be dirty but a black discharge is also a sign of an ear infection. If it comes back almost right away or he/she is scratching the ears a lot- make sure you get it checked by a vet. Ear infections are easy to treat, especially if you catch them early. Good luck with your new pup!

Are they black specs? If so do they move? They could be ear mites. Even if you don't think they are you may want to treat for them anyway, just in case, it won't hurt anything. You should definately clean the dogs ears first. Any local store that carries pet products should have ear cleaner. I would prefer using this over any homemade concoction. The stuff you buy also has a lubricant in it which will prevent the ears from getting irritated. Follow the directions on the bottle. It will usually tell you to clean the ears once daily untill buid up is gone then after that to clean them once a week or every two weeks afterward to prevent build up. If you use ear mite solution wait untill after you clean the ears, it will be more effective. This will also have directions and can be bought over the counter. If the puppy is less than 12 weeks consult the vet before using otc ear mite treatment.

Could be ear mites, could be a yeast infection. There are drops. Clean ears out with cotton balls, and use ear drops that are found in most pet stores. Do this daily, after it has cleared up, once a week to keep them clean. Keep the ears as dry as possible. Moisture and darkness are both mite and yeast attractors. If your dog shows a lot of discomfort, shaking his head, scratching his ears..take him to the vet. They will determine what it is yeast or mites and treat it. Both can cause your dog a lot of pain because the scratch and itch their ears raw. Yeast can also spread to the skin and cause them to scratch and itch all over. So don't let too much time go by before you get a hold of a vet.

Is your puppy a lab? Some dogs need their ears cleaned regularly. Buy some hydro-cortisone spray from any pet store or Walmart, K-mart...etc. around $5.00, and a whole bunch of Q-tips. You can wipe out some with a warm washcloth or clean rag or use the spray on the cloth, not in the dogs ear. When you're going in with the Q-tips for the hard stuff, spray those down as well. You can't hit the dogs eardrum like like you can ours when you push too far. A dogs eardrum is located not in the back of the ear, but back and then down. So you can't reach it. Be gentle but don't freak out when he shakes his head at first from feeling the Q-tip. If you're lucky your dog will come to love ear cleaning day like ours does.

Use a mixture of Alcohol and Vinegar and clean out his ear with a cotton ball. If doesn't clear up with a couple days or get worse have the vet take a look.

If he a breed with floppy ears they are prone to dirty ears and even yeast infections. I

I agree. NO Q-TIPS. Cotton Balls are the best bet. But, if the dog is shaking it's head or scratching, it's best to take it to the vet and find out exactly what's going on. Could be mites...but most likely a yeast infection. Gotta keep those ears clean and dry.

Wipe the ear out with a damp cloth. There are ear cleaners available on the market. If the dog shows signs of discomfort call the vet and make appt. Could be infection or mites.

Yes, that is wax. Take a Q-tip and have someone help you, you can gentle remove the wax from the ear. Then I would buy some sauve for the ears and put it in after you are done. This can be found at any local pet supply store. It is for ear wax removal. We have to do this with my one dog about once a month.

Yes. You can get expensive ear wash at the pet store or just do it yourself with alcohol on a cotton swab.

Do you have cat's too, it could be ear mites. If you just want to clean it, use alcohol and water mixture on a cotton ball.
