Stick two thumbtacks in a board. loop a string over them so that the length of the string is about twice the spacing of the thumbtacks.

Stick a pencil in the string and pull it tight away from the thumbtacks. While keeping the string tight, draw an arc from a point lying on a line through the two thumbtacks to the opposite point lined up on the other side of the thumbtacks.

If you keep the string tight, the curve you draw is an elliptical arch.

There, that's old school for you....
