Why do hospitals need to record blood types? Blood type determines organ and blood matches in the event of blood transfusions and transplant surgery. Time is crucial in determining your survival directly after an accident, trauma, etc, making it important for hospitals to have this information in advance.
Blood type and rhesus factor tells doctors what sort of substances are found on the surface of your red blood cells. The blood types are A, B and O, and the rhesus factor is +/-, meaning you either have it or you don't. Type A blood has A molecules on it, B has B molecules, and O blood has neither. Some people, AB, have both A and B molecules on their red blood cells.
Your immune system recognizes and kills anything in your body you weren't born with, such as viruses and bacteria. It's how you stay healthy. So, if you were to suffer blood loss and receive a blood type much different from your own, the subtances on the red blood cells (RBCs) would signal to your immune system that they are different. Different is usually bad for the body, so this triggers a massive immune response which will kill those red blood cells and will again leave you low on blood. However, this is not your only problem. The iron leaked from the dead RBCs can damage your kidneys and the shock can kill you.
Currently, there's research being conducted into synthetic blood products to avoid this problem.

Hospitals need to know your blood type in case you need to have a major surgery that requires blood. Hospitals also need your blood if you've had a trauma to your bood or if you are bleeding internally. Certain blood types can be given to other certain blood types. Type O blood is the Universal Donar which means they can donate to A, B, AB & other O's. AB blood is the Universal Recipient which means it can receive blood from all blood types. But, A blood can only be received from A & O and so on.

blood vessels have proteins (or lack them) on the surface, depending on the type.
Type A has A proteins, B has B, AB has A and B, O has none.
negative and positive also matter, too. the "positive" is another protein and the negative is the lack of it.
if blood is introduced in your body and you do not carry that protein, your body attacks the blood and the patient usually dies.
type AB positive can take any kind of blood and be unaffected, but type O- blood can ONLY recieve type O-.

If they ever need to give, take blood or treat you, there are a lot of things that depend on blood type. Certain medications can't be distributed to certain blood types. There's also the fact that when it comes to taking infromation, the doctors don't have time to do it all.

Some blood types do not mix. O+ is universal -- but B negative is not. If by chance you have a need for blood and fast, it is good to know what blood to resupply your body with.
