My hair is cardboard colored naturally. I spent over 60$ getting a bleach job that was overprocessed. So since then I do it myself . There are a few secrets to doing this yourself.
The first one is not to go platinum blonde if you plan to do it yourself . Very pale blonde needs an expert application because any mistake you make will be a full scale disaster. There is not much room for error. I don't recomend boosters to speed up the peroxide. You have to be trained to bleach platinum. If you over process you may have the hair simply disintegrate- it will feel slimey and limp OH NO! Or just frazzled and utterly dry limp and dull. Plus it won't look natural. So if you compromise then your hair wont be damaged . It will stay glossy, strong and the color will be vibrant if you make it medium to dark blonde. Occaisionally a really pale champagne blonde will make a person look like a white haired elderly woman . So don't underestimate the color factor.if its too brassy add one teaspoon of blue black . Test a strand to make sure its right. Moreover a darker shade of blonde will grow out looking far better. What does not work is black hair and white hair together.
Down here in the south USA we have a lot of old sloppy women with blonde hair. They don't turn any heads. However waist length black hair turns heads. I've had my hair jet black and golden blonde. Men dont pay any attention to blondes because they are a common sight. The black hair was the one men liked. Anything different will get attention. If everybody is blonde then your going to look like his mom.
Dump in a 2 fl. oz bottle of l'Oreal excellence 8.3 golden blonde base gold into a ceramic bowl. Fill the emty bottle halfway up with 20 volume peroxide and the other half 30 volume peroxide. This lows it down some. Mix that thick peroxide with the base gold . Stir it up very well and set the timer twenty minuites. I try to work fast because the dye stops at about 25 minuites. Just take care not to slop it into your eyes working to fast!!!. Make sure you buy thick peroxide not the runny kind. I used to section and part my hair. I don't do that anymore. I put on a nice snug pair of neoprene gloves. They need to fit. Apply the hair color with the fingers and work it into the roots. Smash your hair flat to push it through your hair. This works for me because my hair is very thick. If you color every 3 -4 months this works out fine because your roots will be 3 inches. dye your hair before big events when you want to look great and give the scalp a rest the rest of the time . Too much oxidation is bad for the scalp. I figure less is better when dealing with potentially carcinogenic chemicals. If you do it more often you should section and part it carefully and use an application brush. I use a bamboo skewer to part with because my hair is down to my butt. Just burn the tip so it's not sharp. Then sand it with an emery board. It's longer and gives you better reach. try to work by feel as much as you can. You know the peroxide is working when your scalp feels hot. At that point you need to watch the processing carefully or it will be too light. check all the sides. I start in the back because its darker and needs more time than the front. When the roots are done squeeze the dye out through your hair to color the long part. add a little water to move it along. Leave it on for about 4-5 minuites. Then go to the tub and rinse it with the faucet. You can do it in the kitchen too. It goes down the drain not your back! Use the shower after you get it rinsed out totally. Keep a dry terry cloth as your rinse. You want to keep your eyes dry. Take a lot of care not to get it into your eyes. I am always sure to keep a bottle of saline solution to irrigate my eyes if anything gets into mt eyes. I take several damp cloths just for clean up wipeing spots off the basin and my face. Look around and clean as you go. I cover the floor with an old sheet. Just wipe it up right away.
Rinse your hair and leave the residue in for 1 or two days so the dye takes well . Then shapoo it out . hairdressers use a shampoo cap but I find it irritates my scalp and strips the color. Keep an eye on the time . when i was a teenager in 1968 my mom started bleaching her hair. She got me to do her roots by allowing me at 15 to bleach my hair too. So we did each others roots. our hair was short about 3-4 inches. The full set. I dont work that hard now i braid my hair and it looks great.

It depends on the condition of your hair at the moment and how much lighter it needs to go from your natural colour. If youre naturally dark it will take a long time for the the bleach to lift it, drying it out. It wont necessarily ruin it though.
Id suggest going to a professional hairdresser for anything really drastic, at least in the first instance.

no it wont I got white highlights and they were bleached. the only thing about bleaching it yourself is that you really need to do it fast like put it then like in 4 or les min rinse it because it will turn completely white unless you want it like that, well thats how I did. incase the hair turned white then you need to buy blond dye so it wont look like that

bleach does dry out hair.
if you keep having it done it will damage your hair.
get some henna conditioner and take time out every week to give your hair a deep conditioning treatment if you bleach your hair. that should help.

try tinted highlights first as this will still lighten your hair but not damage it as much. you can get blonde tint, it doesnt have to be bleach, unless you already have colour on your hair, good luck!
