Someone I know was told this by his doctor when he complained that he had a cold but had to be in the playoffs.
DON'T DO ANYTHING BUT REST THE DAY OF THE GAME, THEN AFTER THE GAME REST AGAIN. BE SURE TO DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS. Of course the doctor knew he didn't have something like pneumonia, and anyway it wouldn't be a good idea to play if you were coughing a lot. And no, there is no such thing as sweating out a cold. Only the fact that when your fever breaks, you feel better.

The sweating out of a cold/flu refers to letting the fever run it's course. When your body has a fever it will start to sweat. The function of the fever is to create a hostile environment (hotter than normal) for whatever virus you have, which then should kill said virus.

I learned this the hard way, a year or so ago I took aspirin and ibuprofen to break the fever and thus the virus of simple flu hung around long enough for an infection to set in in my lungs, causing pneumonia. Ever since then, even if I feel like crap, I let a fever run it's course.

With regards to your hockey game tonight, I don't like your chances sorry. Even if your fever broke before the game you will likely feel bad and not at peak performance as your body recovers.

In my experience... there is...
Most virusses are killed when 'heated'. In case of the flu your body (sometimes) heats up itself... you'll have a fever. It's a mechanism that, when it's working well, warms up your body to a temperature where the virus is killed, but you survive.
I case of a 'simple' cold, i think the jury is still out on whether or not 'sweating it out' helps, but i believe it does.
