They have the same engine and transmission, but the Yaris gets 40 mpg… The xA only gets about 36 mpg - but it is sportier and has many more options… But the base model Yaris is less expensive… AARRGH!

Get a Corolla, Almost the same mileage ratings as the Yaris, but over 20 more horses.
If you check ads in the paper you can find Corollas selling for close to the same price as a Yaris, and they are in less demand now since next year they are coming out with a new model. Best time to get a deal.

From my personal experience with Toyota cars, I strongly suggest that you buy the new Corolla 2006 without hesitation. The reason is simply that the Corollas have been in the market for a long time and they are already tested for their reliability, durability, good performance, economy on fuel intake and safety features. In the long run, the Corollas have proven over and over again to be the least problematic car in its own class. Besides, it's popular and has a high resale value in the car market. Although the Yaris is much more stylish, modern and more expensive compared with the Corolla, it has not been in the market that long to prove it's worth or advantage over the Corolla. However, the Scion is similar to the Yaris which have not proven it's worth over the Corolla.

I think the Scion will have a little better resale value and it comes well equipped. The Yaris is a bare bone transportation pod without up grading it with lots of expensive options, then it costs as much as the Scion. The real life gas mileage is going to be virtually the same.

Depending on how much you want to spend, the Yaris is of course the more economical option to purchase. I do believe netiher car is manufactured in the US if that makes a difference.
