Lumix - best camera I have ever had, either digital or traditional. Absolutely great results.

I have a Fuji S9500 (called an S9000 in the USA) The pictures from it are just not sharp and clear. I compared it to a work colleague's and his was worse. Before this I had an S7000 and it was a lovely camera.

I was considering the Fuji S3 but when the 9500 was so poor I bought a Nikon D50 instead. I am now a sworn fan of Nikon DSLRs.

Earlier answers to your question seem to indicate that people are very happy with a Panasonic. A friend of mine who just bought one is taken with his, so my advice in your instance would be go for the Panasonic.

I have a Lumix FZ5, and I think it is great. All Panasonic DMC point and shoot cameras are good. But if I was seeking to move up in price, rather than getting the FZ50, I'd choose the new Nikon D40 as it produces significantly better results, even though it is 6MP as oppoxsed to 10MP. As a SLR camera, it has a much faster shutter speed, offers a greater range of lenses in the AFS category and is only a little more money than the FZ50. The FZ50 has significant 'noise' problems compared to the D40, and small crops from the D40 will be much much better than those from the FZ50. You can see my FZ5 pics @ http://jmpr.photium.com/

Fujifilm nudges out the Panasonic with its larger sensor (1/1.6" vs. 1/1.8") on the other hand the Panasonic has a 12x zoom vs. the 10x on the Fujifilm. And then there is the Leica lens on the Panasonic. You are on your own here. Too close to call. Go into your local camera store and hold them in your hand and see which one feels the best to you.

I have the fuji s9000 and love it but for zooming long distances you have to use a tripod with it to get a clear picture
