Dial 00 for the international exchange then 1 for the USA followed by the number.

If you make regular overseas calls you might want to try a service such as EasyDial (http://www.easy-dial.com), which offers cheap overseas phone calls after a £25 downpayment.

Dial 001 then the area code and the number. It's worth going onto google and you can get acess numbers that you dial before the international code etc that will only charge you 1 or 2p per minute rather than the standard 15p per min BT rate.

0844 799 0181 - this one is 2p per min, i have used it before. Dial this number then a voice tells you to dial the international code (001) and the number you wish to call - bob's your uncle.
