Legally he can sue you for it, or for it's value

The Engagement ring signifies I binding contract of guarantee of marriage, like a dowry. No matter the circumstances of the break the man is entitled to recover the dowry if he so chooses. (Check you state laws as well) Some states have time limits for him to try and get the ring back.

There was a time that the ring was given back if the girl broke off the engagement. If the guy broke the engagement off the girl kept the ring. In this day people do not do things as they once did so I think if there is a big debt owed it would be nice that you give the ring back so he can get some sort of adjustment on the ring if taken back. If you keep it won't it remind you of a bad relationship? Any future girl he may have will not wish to wear your ring anyway.

Legally, the ring is a gift dependent on the promise to marry. If you break up before you get married you must give it back. If you divorce, then you can keep the ring. No matter who broke up with whom, the ring belongs to the giver until the promise of marriage is fulfilled.

First of all, does he want the ring back? If your answer is "yes" then legally you have to return the ring because the engagement ring is there on your finger because you promise to get married..does not matter of reasons why the marriage did not take place..but the fact is that it didn't. So, yes, if he wants it back LEGALLY you must return it to him.

No, the engagement ring is yours. It like your property. But now if you want to you can especially if he's not through paying for it. You could always return it to the store, so he could get a credit for it. Only if you really want to.

It was a gift to you and you deserve to keep it. You do not return Christmas or Birthday presents for your Ex. At one point he wanted you to have the ring. If you do not want to wear it you can sell it. If you like it, wear it on your right hand. You can always melt it down and make it into something you like better.

If you called it off, of course. With him calling it off, I think it depends. If it was a family heirloom, I'd give it back. If he called it off because of something you did, I'd give it back. Otherwise, I'd go with your gut instinct. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out! Hopefully it is for the best.

Why would you want to keep it??? To trade it in for money or different jewelry??? I don't know why you would want to keep it, other than as a means to punish him and to be difficult. Take the high road and give it back.

Of course you do. Why would you want to keep it? It's symbolizes a promise that was broken. If you tried to return it, you'd not only humiliate yourself, but it's going to be worth very little.

Legally, No. If you broke up, you have to give it back. If he breaks it off, its yours. But is it worth the headache?
