The most common jail is the city or town jail. They are comparatively small when compared to county jails or state prisons.
Almost every town has a small jail. Some small towns "jails" are only 1 or 2 cells. These jails are usually for holding prisoners until the prisoner sees a judge the next day or until the prisoner is transferred to the county jail.

The next step up is the county jail. Once again, almost every county in the USA has it's own jail....sometimes called a detention center or a correction center. These jails can get to be pretty large......some holding thousands of prisoners.
