I grew up about 40 miles from Helen, also in the N. Georgia mountains. Even though Helen is well in the mountains, don't expect snow right now. I can think of only one time in my life that the area got snow before January. In fact there is only one ski resort in the entire state, and it is in the extreme N.E. corner of Ga, about 2 hours away and depends on fake powder, if that tells you about the probability of snow.

Usually, winter weather comes to N. Georgia only about once a year. More often than not, the winter weather comes in the form of sleet or freezing rain. Actual snow is a rarity, and towns are not equipped to handle it, meaning driving is hazardous with the slightest glaze. Anything frozen on the ground is enough to shut down the town--schools, stores, everything. The usual climate in winter is overcast, gray, drizzly, with temperatures cold enough to cut through to the bone (thanks to the high humidity), but not cold enough to freeze. I was more comfortable in below-zero-but-dry Colorado than 40-degree-but-humid Georgia.

I hope, though, the disappointing news about the weather is not enough to deter you from visiting. Helen is beautiful, in a campy sort of way. Remember that the town was designed and planned as a tourist attraction and not a cultural site. If you aren't demanding authenticity, you will have a great time. All the same, it is best to visit Helen in the summer, when the weather is hot and the river water is frigid--perfect for tubing!

I went to Helen last week of October for the octoberfest and really thought Helen was great. The dirve through the mountains was beautiful at that time and the town is a quaint replica os a german mountain town. it is campy but they serve great German beers and you can find shops with hard to find European cheese and such. there is a great state park nearby, but you will not find snow, i assure you of that!!

I don't know if there have snow now. But I know it is really beautiful for Christmas time. I had been there two times. It is looking like the village in Germany or Switerzland. I urge you to go there whenever the seasons come.
