Good question--the word section might like this question--anyway, I think in this case "ketchup" is an alternative spelling of "catsup". It may also be an Americanization --that is, a mispronunciation of the word. I bet the Brits pronounce it properly as catsup. this is interesting, I think I'll follow this Q/A.:)

Go ahead and flame me for using a television program to come up with a feasible answer to the catsup versus Ketchup question. You will notice that I did not capitalize “catsup”, but did capitalize “Ketchup”. In an episode of Mad Men, the ad team met with Heinz to create an ad campaign. The final selling point was the spelling of Ketchup. They agreed, "Heinz means Ketchup ... anything else is just catsup." Whether this is factual or not remains to be seen, but I was assuming that Ketchup was a registered trademark of Heinz, based on the discussion. Perhaps the trademark expired and Ketchup is the commonly accepted word now.

Ketchup Is not a brand. It is the type of Tomato Condiment Sauce used for foods. Heinz would be the main brand.
As far as I know Catsup is the same term used in Spanish, and other languages.

Actually "catsup" is not just a spelling for ketchup. Ketchup is actually made up of 95% tomatoe sauce and others are artificial flavors, but catsup is 100% tomatoe sauce.

RE:
Is "ketchup" a brand name for catsup?
I'm wondering is "ketchup" like kleenex. You know, instead of tissues, we use kleenex, and Q-tips instead of cotton swabs. Is is the same thing with ketchup and catsup? Does anybody really call it catsup?
