The rental market is very agressive here. Very. The reason why no one is answering you is likely because your number is from outside in the mainland US or because the place has already been rented. When you are searching for a place, you have to get to the rentals quick and hope that you get lucky and are accepted. The market is so fierce here there are many, many people who will want that rental besides you - and it won't make any difference at all even if it's a little run down place.
I can say that finding a nice apartment near the beach for 1000 or less is going to be extremely difficult. Perhaps if you keep looking and looking and are very, very lucky, you might find a studio further into the city in that range. The majority of rentals have been going for over 1000 here at least since 2003. I also fear rent will be going up yet again next year. The only thing I can suggest is to look for some online rental sites like rent.com or craigslist.com and the like. You could also try the online versions of our two local papers - Starbulletin and The Advertiser. A quick Google search should bring them all up.
Though I will have to say if you come here intending to live here "permanently" make sure you have enough funds to leave just in case living here it isn't at all what you expected. And always overestimate because living expenses are very high in Honolulu. Good luck!

watch yourself! although, you may be excited to move here, like i was when i first got here (thank god im moving back to Mainland in a few months). Apartments in Honolulu are dirty & ghetto. Not all have airconditioning, plus they got major cockroach problems everywhere, does'nt matter which apartment you will be living in, you will have to do Pest Control very often. Also, the parking is bad. Most apartments only allow 1 vehicle, an extra vehicle will be very costly (maybe around $70-$80 extra per month). O'ahu maybe beautiful because of it's scenery, beaches & it being Hawaii of course, it's a vacation spot. Just know that the locals here can get very racist, especially if they find out your from Mainland. The crime rate here is high, especially the drug crime. When you start looking for a job, you will see that they don't pay as much here, not like how Mainland would pay you per hour. The companies are under staffed because they can't find any decent people to hire, typically because none of them can't pass a simple drug test. Honolulu traffic is a nightmare, expect to pay alot of money for parking, most of the places you go, you will have to pay for parking & hope to get validated by someone.
Anyway, I just thought I'd give you a heads up, I know your question was related to finding apartments. So, maybe you should check out the apartmentratings.com and so you maybe able to find a much larger list of apartments as well as ratings from previous tenants to help you make your decision on where you want to live. Good luck & i hope your experience will be better than mine =)

House to the State Capitol, Honolulu could be the lively epicentre of Hawaii and a town worth visit, as you might find with hotelbye . In Honolulu you will discover every thing from historical landmarks and valued monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and lifestyle scene. House to nearly all Oahu's population, the vast town of Honolulu advances through the entire south-eastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing world famous Waikiki. Pearl Harbor is among Honolulu's greatest tourist attractions. Though it is house to the Navy's Pacific Fleet, readers can have a visit to start to see the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri.

I'm a UH Manoa student and there are tons of apartments around town and near the beach (Waikiki), and yes, for less than $1000. They may not be what you expect and old and unrenovated, but they are there. Craigslist is probably the best internet source for apartments/rentals on Oahu, however, the cheap places won't bother to list there! Rentals in Hawaii work a lot differently than in the mainland.
Usually, landlords with vacanies put a piece of paper or business card on a cork punchboard somewhere in the building, and it's gobbled up quick. You just aren't going to have a lot of luck using the Internet.
Also, the reason you are not speaking to anybody is because you don't have an 808 number. Landlords want to rent "immediately" and they often won't speak to people not in the state. If you leave a message, they almost certaintly won't call you back.
One more website to search is www.rentalsillustrated.com, but it's geared towards places likely higher than $1000/mo.

I know someone here that went to University of Hawaii. I'm in Boston. Let me ask him. Check back tomorrow, I'm sure I will have a better answer. He's very helpful and I'm sure will know where/how to get a place to live there.
My friend said it's better to stay in a resonable priced hotel about 10-12 days before the beginning of the next month while you find an apartment. You can find a reasonable priced hotel at hawaiiconnection.com.
To find an apartment, use the local newspapers especially the Sunday papers.
Goodluck. He also said hyou can find a descent place for $1000 a month.

1500 will be about what you'll spend for a decent renovatred, well maintained apartment in Honolulu. The high rises are much better.
