Rightly or wrongly, your ability to speak standard English will be viewed as an indicator of your intelligence and social standing. This is especially true in academic and business settings.

Not always. But in a way it does. If someone writes in haxxor or leet, or otherwise makes a bunch of nonsensical mistakes in their writing, I'm going to assume that the writer is either a troublemaker or didn't really pass in school. And therefore I am not likely to take the writer's words seriously.

But it has to match your demeanor as well or you will look just as foolish as somone who is uses English poorly.
