You can buy herbal sprays to squirt around the tree at any petstore.
It is supposed to keep pets away from areas you don't want them being. Some people swear by them, however, my cat didn't seem to notice.
Some cats like to mess with the tree, others don't. However, one thing holds true, they get more enjoyment out of it if it raises a reaction from you.
So if you're going to do the squirt gun method try to be stealthy and spray them when they arn't looking. As soon as my cat figured out I was the source of the water, he made a game of it and no longer had any fear.
Good luck. But you might just want to live and let live.

That's sort of hard. Cats love Christmas trees and the dangling ornaments. You could try and try to keep them away but they are so willing to play with the tree. A squirt gun full of water is a good treatment, it doesn't hurt them but it is funny to watch them when they get squirted.

Well having a home with that I share right now with 19 cats 8 of them being little kittens and 4 of them being under 6 months , just let me say good luck.. alot of people say that if you can station yourself near the tree with a water bottle they will learn not to go there as they hate water, but this is not always true. I have to just striaghten the tree back up every morning. I have learned that instead of fighting with them I will just leave all of theornaments off and just have lights up until all of these homeless babies get adopted! My main advice is to have fun with them and dont get to fustrated,, and have a Great Holiday !

Well make sure you do not have catnip on the tree. Just kidding, I know you aren't that stupid....I hope. Now in all seriousness, get a spray bottle or mister thing and spray your cats when they approach it. They will learn very quickly. Very quickly. And the cats won't touch that PS3 you have wrapped up underneath the tree.

If the squirt bottle doesn't work then I suggest next year an artificial tree, but then again, they may still climb.
I have two table top artificial trees much to my disappointment, but I don't have to worry.
They stay away and I use no glass or tinsel.

SCAT MATS....scat mats. i can't thank the person who invented this enough. A bit costy, BUT, works great. When the cat, in my case 6 cats and a small dog, go near the tree and step on the mat, a slight shock hits them. I set it off sometimes by mistake. no biggie, but boy does it work. they won't even go near the mat now. i don't even have to turn it on sometimes. the sight of it keeps them away......good luck...

Make it play music they don't like (on the lights), put some tuna far away from your tree and have them eat it and then blindfold them so they can't see where they're going and will be led right to the tuna, and squirt water on them.
