I am really not even sure I'm sure what the "se" refers to in some cases. I thought that it was basically another way to say "someone", but in sentences with objects( that have the personal "a") I am really confused. Thanks for your help.

You can find the answers in the sites below.
Se can be used as a reflexive pronoun (myself, yourself, ourselves), or a pronoun if used before another pronoun (se lo da - give it to them).
These can explain it MUCH better than me - I'm just a novice.

Let's see:

You have it in two cases reflexive (reciprocal) like in

He washes himself = el se lava
He combs himself = el se peina

or
Talking is now allowed.
No se permite hablar.
Smoking is not allowed.
No se permite fumar.
Don´t give it to him.
No se lo des a el.

no se in this case means "it" is not
