I'm currently being treated by my GP for depression and anxiety. I am awaiting assessment by a physcotherapist as I have a lot of complex issues.

I'm wondering if it is a sensible idea to mention to my GP that I am having increasing thoughts of self harm and suicide. I am not going to act on these urges, I am just thinking about it, if that makes sense. I know I am not going to self harm or commit suicide.

Should I mention this to my doctor, or is it better to not tell her and therefore not risk being sectioned? I am as confident as I can be that I won't go through with anything, its just thoughts and urges.

Thanks

It is always a good idea to be honest. This is how you'll receive the correct help you'll need.Good luck.

Wow, you sound so much like me. It took me five months of seeing the same therapist before I even came close to mentioning those thoughts. Even now I can only talk about them in the past tense, not the ones that I think now. I guess my concern is that you say you are not going to act on them but you have urges. Thoughts are one thing, but urges can be so much stronger. My advise is not to lie on your assessment. You can give a straight foward answer and if they ask for more information then you want to give just tell them you don't want to talk about it. Most doc's will be respectful and back off, but they probably will ask you to contract to safety. These thoughts and feelings like so many other mental health issues can be helped with medications and therapy. I know that it is not for everyone, but it never hurts to try. And that coming from a person who spent seven years hinding how they felt and another four refusing to go on medications. I have been on mine for three months now and feel foolish for the years of pain I put myself through.

I don't think you'll be sectioned just for having thoughts of suicide and self-harm. They won't do that unless you are truly a threat to yourself and others (which it doesn't sound like you are). If you don't get help, though, you may escalate to that so the best is to talk to your dr asap. Good luck.

Depending on how long before your next psych appt., I would wait and tell them. However, these thoughts will likely only increase. It's always good to keep people informed. At least tell your loved ones so they can look out for you.

Indeed you should tell your family doctor or another professional doctor or call the nearest crisis hotline or just take yourself to the nearest hospital or get your parents or friends to intervene.

You should absolutely mention your suicidal thoughts to your doctor.

You should, but yet what you do not say will not hurt you, in most cases. Just tel them and take action if you want to feel better!

Tell your GP. Maybe she can prescribe something for you while you are waiting to see the therapist. Don't put it off...

Yes, you should tell her. Doctors need to know everything they can to be able to help you the way you need to be helped.
