Mega Pixel = One million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a graphics device, such as a scanner, digital camera or monitor.
The Higher the resolution the better the quality of pic at larger sizes.

Every digital camera image is made up of a series of dots. The more dots the better the quality of the image.

Being technical we can't simply call them dots, so we refer to each dot as a pixel.

Mega is a standard prefix meaning One Million (1 000 000)

So in your example, the camera takes pictures with 4 million dots or 4 million pixels.

They are rated in megapixels; that is, the product of their maximum resolution dimensions in millions.
