A crucial question is, how are you crossing the border into Detroit?
If you are flying to Detroit first, then you will need a passport starting January 23rd, 2007
Are you getting to Detroit via car or bus? If so, and if you are a Canadian citizen, you will not need a passport until January 2008 at the earliest, and June 2009 at the latest. So no, in that case you will not need a passport if you are traveling to Detroit first next February by land.
Keep in mind, even after the new flight rules go into effect this January, you will NEVER need your passport to board a domestic U.S. flight, such as one between Detroit and Orlando. A passport check is only done at the border, or on international flights.

You will not need a passport to drive across the boarder. Not for another year.
HOWEVER, you need to check with your airline on what acceptable identification is to board a plan. You need to ask what a Canadian on a domestic flight must present. The regulations vary from airline to airline and they should advise you when you bought the tickets.
Here is a link with some answers. including the next year date for phase 2 - require passports at ground crossings.

I know next year they are going to be requiring passports, and I do not know how strict they are going to be. I know for many years the U.S. had an open border policy with Canada, but things are changing. I still remeber when Prez. Fox was first running for prez, and he told his people, he would try and work with the U.S. to try and get an open border policy with Mexico, like the U.S. has with Canada, and man, did I laugh my a s s off, becasue I knew that would "never" happen. Sorry, just had to add that.
