I'm not from your area, but a quick search led me to this website which, I believe, is close to you and is a "cat re-homing center." I thought it might be useful to you. Rescue a cat or two - You'll be glad you did ;)

Try your local rspca or cpl branch. With cpl you give a donation in payment for the animals you recieve whilst the rspca takes a set amount for a cat/kitten but this normally includes things like the microchip for id etc so is actually a really good price.You could also try pdsa etc. The only problem you may have at the moment is that many animal charities do not rehome at xmas as people get animals & then kick them out a couple pof weeks later. Howewver you should be able to reserve your chosen animal which you will be able to pick up at a date agreed by you & the charity involved. Long answer but hope it helps.
