Shortwave radios are very susceptible to household sources of interference, such as your computer, the refrigerator, AC line noise, TV, pretty much anything. The best way to get rid of the crackly is to go outside or put a nice long antenna outside as far away from power lines as possible.

It's hard for me to suggest frequencies if I don't know where you are. Higher frequencies (11MHz and up) are better during the daytime and lower frequencies (8MHz and down) are best at night. In the middle of those, about 7 to 12 MHz are good all the time. Of course all of this depends on band conditions and the solar cycle. We're at the bottom of the cycle right now. In 3 or 4 years, you'll hear a lot more stations, a heck of a lot stronger and more often. It has to do with the amount of sun spots on the sun.

This list is good for listeners in North America. If you're elsewhere, the frequencies might not be right, but it will give you a good idea of where abouts to look.
