the trick to losing weight, in my experience, has been knowing what to eat that would keep me full, but still stay low in calories. although diet is important, it does help to work out to build muscle. muscle uses many more calories than fat, so having more muscle mass actually helps you lose weight even when you're not exercising. in my opinion, the elliptical trainers give you the best results for your time. you can run on one for half an hour, and burn 400 calories and also build up your legs. if you're like me and have problems with hunger when trying to diet, try grapefruit, peanut butter, wheat bread, turkey, unsalted nuts, salad, and other fruits and vegetables. all are low in trans fat and supply the right kind of fats that your body actually needs. also, drink more water. water makes you feel fuller, and if you're not big on plain water, try propel/flavored water or unsweetened iced tea. you can lose 10 pounds a year just by cutting out sugary drinks. good luck!

You've gotten some great answers. But here are some ways to count calories. Go to www.caloriecounter.com I put that information into an Excel spreadsheet and then I can monitor the amount of calories I am allowed each day (because as I drop weight, my daily calorie intake will go down).

I also found that interesting about the 1200 calorie per day info. I had no idea that that would trigger the starvation effect (I thought it was lower than that!)

A good way to lose weight is to work out every other day -while at the gym focus most of your time on the trenmill. Run until you sweat everytime. Make sure you eat healthy, try to stay away from any take out foods, soda or things of that sort. Its best to eat home cooked meals and drink mostly water. Do this and you should see results sooner than you think possible.

It's already been said, but I'll reiterate: cut Calories!
a pound of fat is roughly equivalent to 3500 Calories. So if you can cut 3500 Calories from your diet every week, your body will burn one pound of fat.
A lot of people who start a workout routine start to increase their Caloric intake, either because they think it's necessary or because they're just hungier than they were before. This can sabotage your workout, because sometimes people start eating more Calories than they burn during a workout!
Keeping a journal or a running tally of the Calories you take in during each meal is a good place to start, and once you know what your average intake you can begin to reduce gradually. Just remember to not reduce your Caloric intake below 1200 Calories per day, or your body will go into "starvation mode," which could make you start gaining weight!
I eat 1200 Calories a day (except on the weekends -- you've gotta treat yourself a little sometimes), which without exercise allows me to maintain my current weight.

The only thing that is GUARANTEED to work is eat fewer calories. Stay under 1500 calories a day including any liquid that you drink and you will lose weight. Its not hard, I stay under 1200 a day to lose weight and it works PERFECT!

I'm not an expert but eat a low fat well-balanced meal and exercise. In my opinion there is no way you can lose weight without exercising.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

There is no easy way. Diet and exercise. Period. Simple math - the calories you consume must be less than those you burn.
