The PS3 has problems for some older model HDTVs that can only display 480p and 1080i, and NOT 720p. For two reasons you shouldnt worry about this dilemma because A) IF you're buying a new HDTV, chances are that it will support 720p/1080p which will work fine with the PS3 and B) Sony is working on a software update that should fix the bug plaguing older models.
Certain things you'd want to look for with finding a game console game HDTV, first and foremost is to find a model that has has minimal video lag. These are mostly LCDs and Plasmas. DO NOT buy a DLP HDTV for gaming. DLPs are notorious for poor response in games, as much as 75ms. Yes, DLPs have the greatest image processing, but thats not the only thing you're considering when gaming. When shopping try to find those HDTVs with a "Game Mode" function that specifically addresses this lag. Other things to consider- Image quality, its no good to compare specs, go into the store and judge with your own eyes. Also, find a tv with HDMI ports, multiple ones if you fancy it. and be sure to have HDMI cables to view the HD signal; they are sold seperately.

The PS3 can reach up to 1080p in resolution. I have a Sony HDTV LCD 50 DLP and it looks great. My max is 1080i for my TV.

alex-any tv that can support 1080i (or even better 1080p) will suit your ps3 fine-if the tv you are looking for is over 37" then go for a plasma-below this then it has to be LCD-look for an HDMI input (available only on hd ready sets) or a DVI input-but beware that while the graphics will be absolutely the dogs cajoneys watch out for screenburn so its worth asking about some degree of anti-image sticking circuitry.

Dude, DON"T get LCD. I just bought the Samsung 61" 1080p. It's the dogs balls. You can get a MUCH larger DLP TV for the same price as a much smaller LCD/Plasma. Trust me...you'll be happy you did.

Don't do it. Just buy a regular tube. You can get a 32" for about $300 at best buy or circuit city. For whatever reason, in time, the game's on your LCD will mess up the LCD.
