In the City of God there will be a great thunder,
Two brothers will be torn apart by chaos, whilst the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb'
'The third big war will begin when the big city is burning'

- Nostradamus 1654

In the land of God the evil will strike.
The people shall receive many a great blow before they triumph.
Fire and flame shall engulf many, but the evil will be defeated.
Across the sea shall the wrong-doers flee, pursued by sword of justice.

- Nostradamus 1658

Personally I think it is a load of cobblers, as the original French writings were very vague and ambiguous, and can be translated many ways (depending on how you want it to read), but hey it's something to discuss and it's better than the Da Vinci Code...

If Nostradamus predicted 9/11 then why didn't we stop it? His so called predictions are only noticed after the fact.

In some English translations of his predictions, the "City of God" you mentioned above is written instead as "The New City". Many scholars think this refer to New York. However, many skeptics say that, this was intentionally changed so that it would match the event of 9/11. But the thing is, the book I read where it says "New City" had the copyright year 1983. Surely nobody knows about 9/11 when the book was published in 1983.

In many of Nostradamus' predictions, he uses the phrase "New World" and "New City". This is to distinguish it from "Old World" or "Old City" which refer to Europe in Nostradamus' time. Nostradamus' lived in 1500-1566. At that time, America was not yet discovered. So he simply refer to it as "New World" in his predictions.

Many wonder why his prediction were written in cryptic manner. Scholars says that Nostradamus' lived and died at a dangerous time. His time was a period where it is a crime to practice witchcraft, sorcery, soothsaying, magic, and predicting future. People at that period believed that whoever practice such things are communicating with the Devil or in alliance with the Devil, believing that such feats only comes from the Devil. Such people end up being beheaded or burned alive on stakes. So Nostradamus wrote his predictions in an obscure way to evade arrest and death. Many Scholars believed that had Nostradamus lived at a much later period when there's no more of these persecutions, he could have written his predictions in straight and unambiguous way.

Famous among his predictions were the rise and fall of Napoleon, French Revolution, Rise and Fall of Hitler, WWI, WWII, Atom Bomb. Dreadful predictions that are yet to happen are WWIII and the rise of the 3rd Anti-Christ (the 1st and 2nd Anti-Christs believed to be Napoleon and Hitler).

My native language is French and to be honest, it seems clearer , easier to understand in your English...
I think it is strange in a certain way that whatever he wrote can be seen as a prediction. (afterwards, though)
I am a writer and believe me it takes some energy to do so.
The question for me is more, why did he write such a book to start with?
Why did he use such obscure language!
I don't see the use to forecast something if nobody is ever able to understand what you are talking about BEFORE the hell breaks!
Now of course, you could always think that at the time he was living, it was wise to speak in coded language.
But it seems even more nonsensical to me: it would only arise more suspicion.
I can not made fish or flesh of it as we say in French!

I believe that you answered your own question. Granted, there is ambiguity in Nostradamus's predictions, however once they do happen his words begin to come together and make sense.

I personally believe there is merit in what this man had to say. I particularly like his prediction that 'evil will be defeated'.

The only person that has a clue to what he wrote was him. I bet he was getting drunk one night and told his buddies

"Hey, watch me write some rhyming garbage and in the future people will think it means something."
