I have read through all the answers given so far and BUSHIDO probably had the most correct point . Ninjutsu will not be what you expect . There are many schools claiming to teach ninjutsu , most are frauds . Try doing a search on Stephen K. Hayes . He teaches the closest thing to true ninjutsu outside of Japan .
Try the website Albert M. suggested .

First get all the hollywood bullcrap out of your head. Ninja were the cultural opposite of the samurais. Samurai were the knights, the ruling class while ninja were peasant farmers. Much of their weaponry was modified farm equipment. Ninja were usually assasins or thieves and the art of ninjuitsu revolved around techniques of spying and secrecy.

Ninjutsu is the deadly art of assassination and covert actions towards a opposing force or military force. This type of use was usually ordered by warlords or heads of state against rival warlords or others.....The equivalent to our modern day CIA or other special forces. The use of a variety of different weapons & tatics were the trademark of these special warriors .....mercenaries were also known as Ninjas who were hired for there talents of stealth & killing!!

ninjas were the japanese assassins of historical times. they could kill *** like no ones business. think mob hitmn but way older, and women made the best assassins. they would pledge there allegiance to a warlord and were only used to kill in silence.
there have only been a few americans able to learn the way of the ninja, and they are not disappearing.
They still hide in the shadows killing in silence.

If you dont know what they did recently thn you cant call yourself a true martial artist. but they are still around.

its a fraud, don't bother.

Go to www.bullshido.net for the whole story.

Ninjitsu is either an outright fraud, or it is a collection of techniques from other styles (or another style) that someone has attacthed the name "ninjitsu" to to help them market thier school and make money.

If you want something that is close to what a "historical" ninja supposedly practiced, then I suggest joining the USMC sniper school or the CIA.

(there is doubt as to whether or not ninjas historically existed)

all it's about TODAY is about the self defense techniques and study of their sword fighting techniques, other than that or what you may've seen by Anime, Movies, or heard. that's all it's really about.
