Probably because they want their children to be presentable. Unless you import ink from BFE Out of Country and get around FDA regulation, ink poisoning is simply a lie. No ink that is easily attainable or used in an every day manner is toxic. Pen ink and paints available in the United States don't have lead or any other sort of chemical in them anymore, and haven't since the mid 70's.

Because grandparents yell at parents enough as it is :)

Seriously: my kids get paint, ink, ketchup, dirt and all sorts of stuff on themselves. Ink is the hardest to wash off, that's all.

my kids write not only on themselves, but on the tables, walls (everthing else) that cant get off. If they think its okay to write on themselves, then its okay to do it to on everything else. It is up for us parents to wash it off of them and the surface they did it too; but also for us parents to teach them the boudaries to using pens, crayons, markers and paint.we just dont write on anything like themselves, walls, and tables.

I think its just because of looks. There are plenty of ways to remember to do something without putting it on your hand.
