I am looking into buying the Samsung 56" DLP 1080p TV. I wanted to know is there (any or much) differance in picture between 1080i and 1080p. What is Satelitte at? Don't play games, want it for movies. Which TV's are good for 1080i

i stands for interlaced and p stands for progressive scan. Broadcast sources do not exceed 1080i. 1080p is only natively in HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and PS3's. That doesn't mean a 1080i signal won't look better on a 1080p screen, because it will, however those three sources are the only ones that take full advantage of it at this time.

The other guys did a good job describing what Interlaced and Progressive scan means (except that it's 60 times per second) so I'll leave it at that.

1080p is supposed to be the better of the 2. According to Directv's commercial they broadcast at 1080i so I don't know if 1080p would do anything for you. The way I understand it, 1080i is "interlaced" which means every other line on the screen is refreshed every other time. 1080p stands for "progressive scan" which I assume means that every line is refreshed every time the screen is refreshed (like a bazillion times a second or something.) Hope this helps.

1080p means the set has an actual native scan rate of 1080 horizontal lines.

i stands for "interlaced." Simply put, an interlaced scan rate is a way of faking a higher resolution (horizontal scan rate)

1080i means that the set produces a native resolution of less than that, say 540 lines, and produces a 1080 scan rate by adding information in between each of the 540 lines, based on some prediction method, looking at the information contained in te line above, and the line below the interlacing line.

1080 is the vertical resolution -- highest for High Def TV.

"I" means the display is interlaced -- that is, when "painting" the picture, it does every OTHER line first, then fills in the other lines.

"P" means progressive - when it "paints" the screen, it does every line from top to bottom of the TV. "P" tend to be better refresh etc.

Go for the "P" - I don't think the cost is that different. Its not likely you'll see the difference tho.
