My husband wants a shitzu. I have a great dane. I'm afraid the dane with accidently hurt the shitzu. Can the two live safely together?

I have owned Danes for a long time. Each one is different. What I recommend is finding a way to socialize your Dane with other dogs. If it behaves without that classic "pounce", you're probably just fine. If it freakes out, you have your answer. I divide my Danes into two main categories: cats and horses... I know, weird.

Cats: Never make clumsy mistakes. They may be aggressive towards things they find... different.

Horses: Freak out and panic... you would know what I mean if you have one of them.

In general, if your Dane is a horse, don't try it. If it's a Cat, you can probably swing it. Good luck.

This partly depends on the activity level of your Dane. If your Dane is a relatively calm dog, you will likely not have any problems. If your Dane is a bit more hyper, you may just have to be vigilent about keeping an eye on the two of them together and not allow them to be unsupervised. In any case, an accident can happen, but I would think after your new puppy gets a little bit older, he/she would be more wary of the larger dog.

I have a Great Dane and as long as the dane is gentle and not agressive...i have never seen an agressive dane.. anyways they should be fine. i have an 11 month old puppy and they get along So well. when i first got my puppy she was 6 weeks old and my dane would lay down on the floor to play with her. he was very careful around her.

It depends on the temperament of each dog. You might actually find the ShihTzu turns out to be the boss. Dominance has nothing to do with size in canine behaviour.

I have Pekes and Saints. They learn to get out of the way.
