It sounds like you've got a really interesting time ahead - wish u luck with that ! If you want to see what the current state of the art seems to be from the Electronics Fair in Tokyo, there's a video here http://coull.tv/node/188 - check out the realistic silicone skin.

OK so there's still a long way to go to make robots look like humans - in this case the technical term is "Android" for a robot in human form.

You can actually get off-the-shelf kits like Lego Mindstorms, which are basically lego kits with some built in parts - though not really any intelligence, just movement and some sensors. Perhaps that'd be a great start !

Most robots like the one in the video have basic sensors to detect movement ("motion sensors"), sound or pressure.

Basic stuff like I guess you're being asked to make will just need small "bumpers" so they can change direction when the robot hits a solid object - prefrably a sofa rather than your foot !

Let me point you to a couple of articles in Wikipedia, the free, online encyclopedia that are well worth reading:

1. Article on robotics in general:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotics

2. Article on high school competiton on robotics, the FIRST program:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIRST_Robotics_Competition

Hope these help!

If you have further questions, email me or post another question. I have worked as a sponsor in the FIRST competition...

Ditto everything above. You may also want to check out The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Robotics. (google it or check amazon.com for it).
